Tanya presented an inspiring TEDx talk in Newtown NSW Australia about the power of accessible music-making for stroke survivors

Stroke is now one of the leading causes of disability, worldwide. Along with the devastating reality of the potential long-term loss of motor function, one-third of stroke survivors will experience post-stroke depression. So how do you motivate someone to continue with their physical rehabilitation, whilst they are in a constant state of depression?

Music Therapist and Researcher, Tanya Marie Silveira believes that we need to empower stroke survivors through accessible music-making; not only does engaging in music therapy emotionally support the survivor, but it also promotes the rewiring of the injured brain... at the same time!

Watch this TEDx talk to find out more… Tanya Silveira is a registered neurologic music therapist who is currently undergoing her PhD research with the National Music Therapy Research Unit at the University of Melbourne, which examines how functional electrical stimulation combined with iPad-based music therapy impacts the wellbeing of stroke survivors.

Passionate and engaged in her profession, Tanya has successfully implemented music therapy programs on the physical rehabilitation of adults and children. Her clinical work and research is well recognised with a national and global scale, including the World Congress of Music Therapy conference in Vienna (2014) as well as the SmartStrokes conference, which led to a publication to the International Journal of Stroke.
